APIP shares opinion piece on the role of plastic in contemporary society
At a time when environmental and climate challenges dominate public debate, and extreme events are becoming increasingly frequent, it is important to reflect in an informed way on the contribution of the materials that shape our daily lives.
In this context, APIP shares the opinion piece by Prof. Maria Elvira Callapez, Researcher at the Interuniversity Center for the History of Science and Technology (CIUHCT) of the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Lisbon, which invites a balanced reflection on the relevance of plastic in contemporary society - between utility, responsibility, and choice.
As the author points out, “plastic should not be seen as an enemy to be eliminated or as a universal solution. (...) the problem lies in how it is used, discarded, or ignored as a valuable resource.”
APIP believes that the debate on plastics should be based on scientific evidence, shared responsibility, behavioral change, and a commitment to the circular economy. Promoting sustainable solutions through research and innovation, improving the efficiency of waste collection, sorting, and treatment systems, and recovering resources are essential ways to ensure that this material continues to serve society in a responsible and sustainable manner.
