The Automotive Sector Takes Center Stage on RTP Antena 1’s “Consulta Pública” Program

Among the key ideas shared, particular emphasis was placed on the role that plastics have played in the evolution of the automotive industry - enabling lighter, safer, and more efficient vehicles that are ready to integrate new technologies.

Weight reduction remains one of the critical factors for improving environmental performance: less mass translates to lower energy consumption, lower emissions, and greater range in electric vehicles.

The industry’s ongoing efforts to decarbonize production processes were also highlighted, as was the importance of promoting public policies and regulatory instruments grounded in science and Life Cycle Assessments, enabling a more comprehensive evaluation of the environmental impact of different solutions. 

In a context of intense international competition and rapid technological advancement, Europe faces the challenge of continuing to lead the sustainable transition without compromising industrial competitiveness.

For circularity goals to progress, it will also be essential to ensure conditions that enable accelerated investment, reduce administrative barriers, and create effective recycling capacity.
