APIP

APIP - Portuguese Plastics Industry Association, is a

non-profit entity and the representative body

of Plastics Industry in Portugal.

Its Members are distributed by

Effective and Adherent members.

Since its constitution, in 1975, succeeding what was then the National Industry Guild for the Composition and Converting of Plastics, formed in May 1957, APIP has sought to embody the interests of the various, very heterogeneous companies that constitute the sector, according to what they have in common.

In pursuing its statutory purposes, APIP maintains close links with its most diverse stakeholders: government entities and public institutions, European and international counterparts, and various community authorities, in addition to all entities involved in the plastics value chain, actively participating in the construction of solutions for a more circular and more sustainable plastic.

Mission and Values

APIP's mission is to promote and support the plastics industry through actions that can contribute to its development and technical, economic and social progress, reconciled with preservation of the environment.

APIP is strongly committed to an environmentally-conscious and responsible approach, adopting the most sustainable practices not only in terms of its processes but also within the sector it represents, promoting increasingly sustainable plastic applications and products, aligned with the objectives of the circular economy, where R&D+i play a key role.

Standardisation

The Normative activity continues to be perceived as an essential activity in view of the challenges that are faced by most companies, subject to pressures from the market and competition.

APIP is recognised by the Portuguese Institute for Quality (IPQ), as a Sectorial Standardisation Organisation (ONS) whose field of intervention is: “Plastic Materials, excluding those intended for contact with foodstuffs.”

Participation in a sector’s Technical Committees for Standardisation allows us to be better informed, have access to the latest knowledge and also influence the content of new standards that will have an impact on a company's business or activity.

Technical Committees Managed by ONS.APIP:

ONS.APIP is responsible for the Coordination and Management of the following Technical Committees for Standardisation: CT 58 and CT 161.

CT 58
Plastic Materials

Among the main activities developed by CT 58, the following stand out:

• Monitoring of European (CEN) and International (ISO) Standardisation work in its area of activity;

• Analysis and Issuance of Opinions and Voting on documentation from these Committees; Issuance of an opinion on issues inherent to the publication and application of Portuguese standards, namely within the scope of Certification Systems;

• Participation in working groups in which consensual positions previously prepared at national level are defended and documents are drafted that will lead to the publication of European Standards and the drafting of standardising documents considered relevant to the sector, particularly mandated norms of justified national interest.

At the same time, CT 58 monitors the standardisation work carried out by the following European and International Technical Committees:

• CEN/TC 155 – Plastics piping systems and ducting systems;

• CEN/TC 210 – GRP tanks and vessels;

• CEN/TC 249 – Plastics;

• CEN/TC 266 – Thermoplastic static tanks;

• ISO/TC 61 – Plastics;

• ISO/TC 138 – Plastics pipes and fittings for soil, waste and drainage (including land drainage).

CT 58 currently integrates 4 Subcommittees.

CT 161
Plastic Piping Systems for the Transport of Combustible Gases

The scope of this CT (Technical Committee) involves standardising tubes, accessories and valves made of plastic materials for transporting combustible gases; General, geometric, physical and chemical properties of the components;

Test methods for components and piping systems. The work carried out in this Technical Committee aims at the preparation and approval of Portuguese normative documents, as well as the preparation of opinions on standardising documents within the scope of its activities and coming from national and international technical standardisation bodies.

At the same time, CT 161 monitors the standardisation work carried out by the following European and International Technical Committees:

Monitoring of the standardisation work by the CEN and ISO Technical Committees:

• CEN/TC 155/WG 12 - Pressure systems of polyolefin material for gas supply, water supply and drainage and sewerage;

• ISO/TC 138/SC 4 – “Plastic pipes, fittings and valves for the transport of fluids – Plastic pipes and fittings for the supply of gaseous fuels”;

• ISO/TC 138/SC 5 – “General properties of pipes, fittings and valves of plastic materials and their accessories – Test methods and basic specifications”;

• ISO/TC 138/SC 7 – “Plastic pipes, fittings and valves for the transport of fluids – Valves and auxiliary equipment of plastics materials”;

Other Technical Committees:

ONS.APIP also monitors the work of Technical Committees in interface areas, namely:

• CT 42 - Hygiene and Safety at Work (managed by APSEI - Portuguese Safety Association);

• CT 60 – Packaging (managed by CNE - National Packaging Centre)

• CT 90 - Basic Sanitation (managed by LNEC - National Laboratory of Civil Engineering) Also participates in the Technical Certification Committees of CERTIF - Association for the Certification of Products, namely:

• CTC 03 – Certification of Pipes for Water for Human Consumption

• CTC 24 – Gas Pipes Certification

APIP is also a founding member of ANQIP - National Association for Quality in Building Installations, and actively collaborates in its Technical Committees for Standardisation, namely:

• Technical Committee 1201 - Revision of Regulatory Decree 23/95 (General Regulation - Building Section)

ONS.APIP also participates, as a permanent member, in the National Technical Committee created by ERSAR - Regulatory Entity for Water and Waste Services in the EAP - Approval Scheme project in Portugal for products in contact with water intended for human consumption.
